About this Spot
Black’s Beach is San Diego’s most secluded shoreline, nestled beneath 300-foot cliffs in La Jolla. It’s renowned as one of the world’s premier surf breaks and is California’s largest clothing-optional beach. The beach spans approximately two miles and offers stunning natural beauty with its dramatic cliff backdrop.
The northern section of Black’s Beach is officially clothing-optional and has been since 1974 (though this designation was briefly revoked and later reinstated by custom). This area is popular with naturists and the LGBTQ+ community, particularly gay beachgoers who frequent the northern stretches. The clothing-optional section is generally understood to be north of the main lifeguard tower.
Access to the beach is challenging - visitors can either take a steep trail down the cliffs or walk from nearby beaches during low tide. The beach is relatively remote and less crowded than other San Diego beaches, which adds to its appeal for those seeking a more private beach experience. The surf conditions are excellent but can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers due to strong currents and lack of lifeguard coverage in some areas.
