About this Spot
Baker Beach is a popular mile-long beach located in San Francisco’s Presidio district, offering some of the most iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The beach has become a beloved destination for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly gay men, and was voted one of the “10 Best Gay Beaches in North America” by luxury travel company Mr Hudson.
LGBTQ+ Popularity:
The northern section of Baker Beach (closest to the Golden Gate Bridge) has a long-standing reputation as a welcoming space for the gay community and has evolved into an emblematic meeting point where people of all orientations feel comfortable and embraced. This area is particularly popular with gay sunbathers and beachgoers.
Clothing-Optional Section:
The northern tip of Baker Beach is San Francisco’s designated clothing-optional area. This section attracts many members of the LGBTQ+ community who appreciate the freedom to sunbathe nude without judgment. On warm days, crowds can reach several hundred people enjoying the beach’s accepting atmosphere.
Location & Access:
Baker Beach is located on the southwest side of the Presidio, easily accessible from downtown San Francisco. Public parking is available in two lots near the beach, though they can fill up by noon on sunny weekends. The beach can also be reached via public transit (bus routes #38 Geary and #29 Sunset).
Features:
∙ Stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Pacific Ocean
∙ Sandy beach suitable for sunbathing and picnicking
∙ Picnic area with tables and grills in a cypress grove
∙ Historical Battery Chamberlin from 1904
∙ Birthplace of the Burning Man festival (1986)
Important Notes:
Swimming is not recommended due to dangerous rip currents, strong bay-to-ocean currents, and cold water temperatures (around 58°F/14°C year-round). The beach is dog-friendly but visitors should be watchful for coyotes. The area is often foggy and cool in summer, which can make for quieter beach days outside of peak sunny weekends.
