About this Spot
Marshall’s Beach is San Francisco’s premier gay nude beach, located directly at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in the Presidio. This secluded, approximately 1,000-foot beach is predominantly frequented by gay men and offers a more private, intimate atmosphere than nearby Baker Beach.
Marshall’s is the main gay nude beach of San Francisco with a distinctly gay male crowd. It’s well-known as prime cruising territory and the last place in the city where gay men can be clothing-optional in nature. The beach is divided into three sections, with the larger middle section (accessed by climbing over a low rocky wall) being the most popular area for nude sunbathers and gay beachgoers.
**Clothing-Optional Culture:**
The beach is decidedly clothing-optional, with most visitors wearing skimpy speedos, underwear, or nothing at all. The northern end toward the Golden Gate Bridge and areas behind large boulders are particularly popular for cruising and nude sunbathing.
Access:
The beach requires a moderate hike down from the Batteries to Bluffs Trail via stairs that wind to the beach. The trail is manageable even for those with minimal hiking experience, though proper footwear is recommended. The challenging access helps maintain the beach’s secluded character and deters large crowds.
Features:
- Spectacular close-up views of the Golden Gate Bridge
- Cliffs provide protection from wind, making it more comfortable than other SF beaches
- Open 24 hours daily, free to visit
- Warmest months are August and September
**Important Notes:**
Swimming is dangerous due to strong currents and cold water (58°F). Check tide tables before visiting as high tide can swallow the narrow beach. No facilities available - closest restrooms at Fort Scott or Baker Beach. Always bring layers as weather can be cool and foggy even on sunny days.
