About this Spot
Gray Whale Cove State Beach, also known as Devil’s Slide, is a well-known clothing-optional beach located in Montara, just 18 miles south of San Francisco. This small, sheltered crescent beach (approximately 800 feet long) sits in a dramatic cove surrounded by cliffs along Highway 1.
LGBTQ+ Popularity:
Gray Whale Cove attracts a mixed crowd including many gay men, making it a popular destination for the LGBTQ+ community. The beach has a relaxed, accepting atmosphere that welcomes naturists and beachgoers of all orientations.
Clothing-Optional Culture:
The northern section, nicknamed “Edun Beach” (nude spelled backwards), is the primary clothing-optional area. After descending the steep 146-step stairway, visitors turn right to reach this section, which is separated by jutting rocks. While nudity is technically banned at California State Parks, it remains common practice, though citations could potentially be issued. The southern section generally attracts families and clothed beachgoers.
Access:
Parking is on the east side of Highway 1, requiring visitors to carefully cross the busy highway (no crosswalk) to reach the steep trail. The challenging access helps maintain the beach’s uncrowded character.
Features:
∙ Named for frequent gray whale sightings during migration (December-January and March-April)
∙ Sheltered cove with white sand and Pacific Ocean views
∙ Historic WWII Devil’s Slide Bunker visible above
∙ Connects to hiking trails to McNee Ranch and Montara State Beach
∙ Open 8am to sunset daily, free parking
Important Notes:
Swimming is dangerous due to strong rip currents and cold water. Chemical toilets available in parking lot only. No water, showers, dogs, or beach fires. Cross Highway 1 with extreme caution. Best for sunbathing and whale watching. Located 9.5 miles north of Half Moon Bay, making it an easy day trip from San Francisco.
